Modern Languages – Portuguese

We believe that the purpose of learning a language is to promote an appreciation of other languages and cultures, and to make language learning exciting and fun. Enjoyment is an important part of the learning process and we aim for fluency, whatever the level.

Our goal is to provide the children with the best preparation for everyday life within Portugal.

The four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are taught. All of our Portuguese lessons focus upon the individual and their level in order to achieve our aim of developing fluency. We recognise that whilst some of our children may be new to learning Portuguese, others will be fluent and at an advanced level. We teach our children according to their individual ability.

Lessons are taught employing a variety of teaching methods, ranging from drama, ICT, Interactive Whiteboard, songs and games. For vocabulary learning we favour the “look, cover, write, check” method.

Portuguese culture is embraced, and the whole school celebrates traditional events and festivals in order to enhance the level of language learning.
